Stage 1 · Single Tones over a Drone

Melody 1.4

Major (Ionian)

1, 2, 7, 3, 5

New tone: 5

A drone plays the root of a major key. Over it you hear single tones from the scale degrees 1, 2, 7, 3, 5. Identify each tone by how it relates to the root – not by the step from the tone before. You will hear twelve keys with twelve tones each.

Tip: Tones appear in different octaves. The 5 is the second anchor after the root – use it to orient yourself.

Step 1 · Listen

Write down what you hear

Print the worksheet. For every key, write the scale degree of each tone – as numbers or in notation. Any octave is correct.

Step 2 · Sing

Sing it, then check

A number appears. Sing that scale degree before the tone sounds, then compare. Sing in your own range – if the tone comes an octave higher or lower, that is part of the exercise.
